Week3 LearningArcGIS Desktop

This was our first opportunity to practice Geoprocessing. The Youth Center project combined city zoning data, the 2000 US census records, with proposed building sites.  The goal - to locate building sites for youth centers for age 5- 17,  in residential zoned areas which had a youth age population saturation of 75% or greater.   Our data returned 6 building sites.

Our second map covered the tourist region of San Diego, California. One day, I'll visit the zoo on this map.

 Process Summary Description
Module 1: Exploring a GIS Map
Exercise: Planning a Trip to San Diego

1) Sent copy of  R:/Intro2gis/Learn ArcGisDesktop.zip to my S:/Introgis.  Created file for Week3Learning ArcGis10/ . Moved LearnArcGisDesktop.zip  into new folder & unzipped  main file.
2)Navigated to Start, found SanDiego.gdb.
3) Added Data files to blank map- saved it as tourism_sandiego_kfm4.
4) Changed labels on each layer to create Legend entries.
5) Adjusted layer symbols for cleaner definition.   Changed surface streets to gray.  Brought major roads and trolley lines & trolley stops forward.  When performing this step, I found reviewing our Rubric and the specific lab objectives were helpful to direct the results of the deliverable to the intent of the assignment.    Saved Map as I went along.
6) Selected layer majattr (major attractions) attribute table, found San Diego Zoo as point.  Highlighted it as single selection.  Created new layer with single attribute of San Diego Zoo.   Changed symbol of Zoo to highlight it against full map.
7) Changed paper size & orientation to landscape, proportioned to printer settings.
8) Adjusted map shape to fit layout view.  Used Guides & grid lines for ease of placement.   Added north arrow. Created Legend, experimented with gap distances. Added rectangle box, inserted title. Chose scale style.  Kept map at full extent .  Added text boxes for Name, date and data source.
9) All said & done, I still went back into several areas of the map to either fine tune portions or correct things that I found when I was proofing.    I have found proofing is no different than term papers, Just a different checklist.  It has made a difference in my finished product.

Module 1: Using GIS to Solve Problems
Exercise: Find Potential Sites for a Youth Center

1) Went to ArcCatalog to find youthcenter.mxd file. Double clicked on it which opened up map in ArcMap. My tourism.mxd file did not show up in my s: drive under Intro/learningarcgisdesktop.zip but I did find it when I would open ArcCatalog.   Anyhow, there was more than one way to skin this cat.
2)  Followed ESRI steps 1-6,  Opened attribute tables for Census 2000 (census_blocks) and city_zones  to preview features and attribute types.  Located Lu_ABV, RES & AGE_5_17 as requested.
3) In Geoprocessing, chose “union” opened dialog box,   from drop down navigated to youthcenter.gdb  chose the city zones layer and census layer as input to join.  They showed up on the features list.  Named new output layer as ctyzone_cens_union.  Clicked ok.
4) Checked attribute table on ctyzone_cens_union to be sure that proper  values were on new layer. They were. Closed.
5)  At Selection, chose selection  by attributes, dialog opens  chose new ctyzone_cens_union layer, create new selection,  chose LU-AbV  created expression “LU_ABV”= “RES”  (in residential zones),  then created new expression for census tracts that were “AGE_5_17”>=75  saturation of youth population.
6) Found available buildings in the selected tracts above by selection by location, through the sentence
“I want to select features from the available building layer that are completely within selected features in the ctyzone_cens_union layer. “   Made sure  “use selected features” was checked.
7) Back to TOC found list of 6 by selection button,  created separate layer for them.  “Building sites w/75%” ,  under properties of this layer, labeled features, modified appearance for ease of identification.
8)  Went to layout view and saw major problem with map scale.  Looked back at other layers, specifically youthcenter.mxd to determine an appropriate scale.  Spent some time  w/trial & error in modifying map scale.  Finally created default map scale on my map to 1:50,000, which kept it from just vanishing off page.  Finished map out with title, legend, data source, name, date made and north arrow.
9)  Added text box for reader information and purpose of map.  Exported to S drive.
