Week7- Data Sources- How to gather is just as important as What.

Out there is so much information now its labeled data. Overwhelming!  Learning the how to collect the stuff is just as important as what to collect.  There are particular steps to picking the fruit which do matter in the big picture.  The goal was to collect up basic map data, environmental layers and two raster layers (aerials and DEM- elevation).
Finding the files was not as difficult as making sure that how it was downloaded was correct.    Lessons were learned in the conversion of the data to a usable form then insuring the projection - "angle of the camera lens" was all turned the same direction for each layer of data when it landed on the map.
Issues arose after the map had been completed.  Final results are not always as it is saved before converting from ArcMap to a jpeg.    It did not look this way when I first saved it.  Layers were not moving up and down within their data frames in ArcMap10.  I have yet to resolve the problem.  Oh well. I am pleased with the intent, layout and theme.    The  process summary follows:

Map 1- Birth of a County Map   Saved as—s:\introgis\week7datasource\Pasco_Base_mjrrd.mxd
1)      Spent time at beginning of lab downloading data.  On FGDL checked against my FLAData Layer file that I had the correct Florida State County Boundary map.  Reviewed & recorded metadata.  I had the major roads, verified metadata. Downloaded City/towns & recorded metadata.  Found Strategic Habitat Conservation Areas, shca_qry_09, downloaded & recorded meta data.
2)      Files were downloaded through internet portal of personal computer onto jump drive.  Opened up filezilla, moved
Files into s:\FLADATAlayers\cntbnd_jun11.shp
                        S:\FLADATAlayers\mjrds_feb04
                        S:\FLADATAlayers\cities_feb04
                        S:\FLADATAlayers\shca_qry_09
3)       Inn arcmap>new>Adddata>cntbnd_shp>
4)      Attribute table>name>select>pasco>show selected>  back to TOC>on layer county boundary>selection>create layer>named layer to Pasco County   saved in s:\fladatalayers\pasco_co_base
5)      Up to Customize>extension>spatial analyist checked.  Added new data layer, dragged pasco co base into new data layer>selection>zoom to layer>added data>major roads from s:\fladata layers\mjrd_feb11.shp
6)      Had to back up step forgot to export   to original Pasco_co layer>data>export
7)      New file s:\Introgis|week7_datasource>Pasco_co.shp    used this layers source data.  Replaced other created Pasco Co files w/new corrected Pasco_Co.shp as layer in both data layers on map.
8)      Clip  inport- majrds_feb11> Cip Pasco_co>Output file—s:]intogis\week7 data source\majrds_pasco_co
Meters unit of measurement
9)      Removed old majoroads_feb11
10)   Added Data Frame 2, added cities_feb04 as new layer.
11)   Geoprocessing >clip> input- cities_feb04   Clip—Pasco co Base >  Output s:\introgis\week7 datasource\Pasco_city_clip.shp
12)   Removed old mjroads 7 cities_feb04
13)   Finished this inset map with complimentary colors for cities, roads & county background
14)   Added new data Frame 3, drug down Pasco_co_base, added  file  [swfla]cons_lands.shp (renamed for clarity.
15)   Need to reproject coordsystem of conservation lands.
16)   Back to projection I lab notes.   Open arctoolbox>data management>projecting vectors.   Projection &
Transformations>features>project>
Input> swflacons_lands.shp
Input coordinate system>  NAD 1983
Output s:\introgis\week7datasource\public_cons_land_albers
Output coordinate>Georgraphic Coord syst>state systems>NAD 1983 HARN Florida GDL albers (meters)

17)   Add data >went to file locations found projection.  Removed old conservation land file.
18)   Performed clip on new projected.   Geoprocessing>clip> input Public cons land_albers>  clip w Pasco co Base
Output s:\introgis\week7datasource\public cons land Pasco.shp    units meters.  Adjusted color scheme, added essential  elements. Saved map.
19)   Ready to copy for downloading.  Layers will not move within their data frame. What’s up? This is such a ugh!

Oh NO! Where is the Pasco County outline, where is the USGS grid and Fivay Junction highlighted. It vanished. Urgh.
There are times............    Before I converted this map to jpeg it was great. Now, urgh.   Just as i had stated above, the conversion shows our projection issues, apparently, there were some conflicts that were not resolved.  Next time, I'll convert to jpeg compare and then see results before posted. Well it would make it the fourth time to fix it. No time left.

Process Summary:

Map 3.    Aerials, Habitat Pasco Co. Saved as:   s:\introgis\week7datasource\
This will be the third time I’ve   this map.  I started with this one at the beginning of the assignment. Between computer problems, internet connection issues and just pure frustration with understanding the projection process, it is a joy to be finished with this map.
1)   Began again from scratch. Went back to labins.org. Found quad DOqq, Fivay Junction, panel  q3521. Downloaded from FTP portal in labins. (internet portal from my personal computer) onto jump drive.  Loaded
a)       Panels q3521ne. extensions sid & sdw; qu3521nw; q3521sw; q3521se. Opened filezilla to  move files to s:\introgis\week7datasource\pasco_co_aerial_3521_qd. Watched carefully to be sure all eight files moved.
2)      New map>add data>moved each quarter panel 3521 into map.   Opened each panel>properties>saw no spatial reference.  Back to arcatalog refer to Projection 2 lab notes, defining spatial reference>select>projected coordinates systems>state systems>NAD 1983 Harn Florida GDL meters to each quad.
3)      New map> added all 4 quads.  They look good, match up to one another. Whew. Leaving these as is.
4)      Added new data frame,  State county boundary, highlighted & labeled Pasco County.
5)      Added new data frame.  Added Strategic Conservation Habitat, checked projection.  Full state is too small to see any particulars.  Added State county boundaries, 50 % transparency with no fill.  Decided to create new layer with selected area of Pasco Co.  Searched toolbox >data management>layers & table views>make raster layer.
Back on map determined extents with meter measurements. INPUT these into dialog box.  Input shca_qry_09 as layer , designated output file in s:\drive, when operation completed file was listed in c:. Tried to find file. Remembered that I needed to export file as layer. Back to makeras layer, export>data>add to map as new layer. This worked with new layer in s:\introgis\week7datasource\makeras_shca_pas11.tiff.  Turned out pretty cool.
6)      Added major roads, adjusted color scheme of habitat to higher contrast.
7)      Finished out map.

Here's the last map of three.
This looks so much better, I caught some issues before it was converted to jpeg.
